A scientist at SSC Pacific attended the Evaludation and Assessment Techniques for Initiatives Seeking to Improvie K-12 Math and Science Education.  San Diego Foundation provides Science and Technology Grants each year for organizations to improve the quality of teaching, student learning. community knowledge, etc.  Other organizations in attendance:  SDSA, San Diego Zoo, Scripps Research Institute, San Diego Unified, Elementary Institute, UCSD.  Assessment techniques were provided by UCSD Economics Professor, Julian Betts.  I had a good conversation with him and have some ideas for assessment.  Also, I have talked t Sharon Bendall and we are working on a proposal for her to perform assessment of the Math Fun class or the Science Fair project next year.

SSC Pacific provided several STEM activities during the banner exchange between the USS Rushmore and Sunset Elementary School.  The ceremony ended with science demos of instant snow, polymer balls, dry ice, tornado tube, and the airblaster (blew out a candle and moved a balloon).

Together with the Secretary of the Navy, the Office of Naval Research is hosting the first Naval STEM Forum. This event will introduce and discuss the objectives of the Navys STEM strategy, showcase effective initiatives and highlight new partnership opportunities.

The Naval STEM Forum will:

• Introduce and advance awareness of the Department of the Navys (DoN) STEM strategy and initiatives
• Present workforce and STEM challenges affecting the DoN and discuss potential collaborative solutions with participants

A mathmatician from SSC Pacific introduced the students to the basiscs of Mathematical Logic and it's applications using truth tables. The students were engaged and seemed to enjoy the topic and activities. The teacher was interested in the topic as studens are tested on "logic" problems for various school tests and the PSAT in high school; she saved the papers to use to reinforce the topic throughout the school year.

The first Girl's Day Out of the new school year was held at the University of San Diego. Students and their chaperones heard from a STEM Panel of female professionals, toured the college campus, heard from an Admissions Officer and got hands-on during a "Build It" Workshop.

ARMY NAVY Bridge Design Competition

The U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy are proud to announce the first-ever Army-Navy Bridge Design Contest. This competition is a special edition of the national West Point Bridge Design Contest, created specially for 6th and 7th grade students. The contest provides students with a realistic introduction to engineering through an engaging, hands-on design experience. Participation is FREE. Contestants may compete on behalf of either Army or Navy and can compete individually or in teams of two. Students must enter this special contest through a teacher sponsor. No individual submissions will be accepted. Teachers can register as contest sponsors by sending an email to [email protected]. Please include your school name, state, phone number, and email address. Once you are registered as a sponsor, we will send you detailed participation instructions and a special contest access code.

Engineers visit local Middle and High schools to present "What is Engineering" and work with them to provide hands-on interactive projects.  Students enrolled in STEM classes seem to be the most interactive and gain working knowledge of what they are studying. In 2012, Engineers from the Research and Engineering Group at FRC East, visited 21 local schools and talked to over 1400 students!
